Jeune Fille et la Mort (Death and the Maiden) remains a popular classical motif in art, literature, music and drama. It is believed to originate in Greek mythology, in the story of Persephone's abduction by Hades, which was a clear preconfiguration of the conflict between Eros (the god of love and sex) and Thanatos (a mysterious figure that personified death). By the 15th century, Death and the Maiden became a new vision based on the Danse Macabre (Dance of Death), often featuring a young virginal female embracing the twisted skeletal figure of Death. This theme has been explored by many great artists across many centuries, interpreting the dark inevitable bonds between life and death. It has always been a delicate and sensitive motif, rarely shown as an image of horror, but rather as a reminder that love, life, and death are all inescapably linked, and that beauty and youth are tragically short. Every human that looks at any painting of Death and the Maiden is looking directly into their own mortality, whether they know it or not.
Rick Jones of Horrify Me has always had a deep fascination with this theme and studied it many years ago. Rick has shot this theme a few times over the years. The most recent version has proven very popular, and so here we offer two matching prints of the Horrify Me version of Death and the Maiden, depicting the two romantic figures in an ambiance of dream-like fantasy.
